Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use store-bought cherry preserves?

While we made our own Cherry Preserves (it’s really quick and easy to make!) you can use a 13-oz jar of your favorite store-bought cherry preserves to save time.

Do I have to use bourbon or whiskey?

No, the bourbon or whiskey adds a layer of depth, but can be omitted for an alcohol-free version. The meatballs will still be delicious.

Can I use a different type of vinegar?

While apple cider vinegar adds a nice tang, you could experiment with a small amount of red wine vinegar if needed.

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes, the meatballs can be kept warm in the slow cooker on the “warm” setting for a few hours before serving. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.

Can I add any other seasonings?

Feel free to add a pinch of garlic powder, onion powder, or a dash of hot sauce for a little extra flavor.

Can I use homemade meatballs instead of frozen?

Yes, if you prefer homemade meatballs, cook them according to your recipe before adding them to the slow cooker with the glaze. You may need to adjust the cooking time in the slow cooker.

What are some good serving suggestions?

Serve these meatballs as an appetizer, over rice, or alongside mashed potatoes for a main course.

Ingredients Needed To Make Cherry Glazed Meatballs in a Slow Cooker

For the Slow Cooker Cherry Glazed Meatballs:

  • 64 ounces (4 pounds) frozen, pre-cooked meatballs
  • 1 (13 oz) jar cherry preserves (see homemade recipe below!)
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ½ cup bourbon or whiskey (optional, for depth of flavor)
  • ⅓ cup apple cider vinegar

For the Homemade Cherry Preserves (Optional, but Recommended!):

  • 2 pounds pitted dark sweet cherries, roughly chopped (it’s okay if a few are left whole)
  • 1 cup water (optional, may not be needed depending on cherry juiciness)
  • ¾ cup (6 ounces) granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest (from about 1 lemon)
  • Pinch of salt

How to Make Cherry Glazed Meatballs

Make the Homemade Cherry Preserves (Optional):

cherries, granulated sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest and salt in a saucepan

Add the chopped cherries, water (if using), granulated sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest, and salt to a large, nonstick pot over medium heat.

Once the mixture reaches a gentle simmer, reduce the heat to low.

Cook the preserves, stirring regularly, until most of the liquid has evaporated and the volume has reduced by about half, about 45 minutes. The preserves should have thickened.
