Tips for the Best Caprese Flatbread:

  • Use Quality Ingredients: The simplicity of this recipe means the quality of your ingredients truly shines through. Opt for fresh, flavorful mozzarella and ripe NatureSweet Glorys® tomatoes.
  • Don’t Overload the Flatbreads: Too many toppings can make the flatbread soggy. Aim for an even but not overly dense layer of mozzarella and tomatoes.
  • Fresh Basil is Key: Don’t substitute dried basil! The fresh leaves add a bright, aromatic element that is essential to the Caprese flavor.
  • Adjust Balsamic Glaze to Your Liking: Whether homemade or store-bought, adjust the amount of balsamic glaze to your preference.
  • Serving Suggestions: Pair this Caprese flatbread with a simple green salad for a complete light meal.

How to Make a Simple Balsamic Glaze at Home:

While store-bought balsamic glaze is convenient, making your own is surprisingly easy and allows you to control the sweetness.

Ingredients for Homemade Balsamic Glaze:

  • 1 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar (optional, for added sweetness and thickness)

Instructions:

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a small saucepan, combine the balsamic vinegar and brown sugar (if using).
  2. Simmer & Reduce: Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat.
  3. Thicken: Continue to simmer, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes, or until the balsamic vinegar has reduced by about half and has thickened to a syrupy consistency. It should coat the back of a spoon. Be careful not to over-reduce, as it will thicken further as it cools.
  4. Cool: Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the balsamic glaze cool completely. It will become thicker as it cools.
  5. Store: Store any leftover balsamic glaze in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.

Ingredients for Your Caprese Flatbread:

  • 2 store-bought flatbreads (about 10-12 inches each)
  • 12 oz fresh mozzarella, sliced
  • 1 pint NatureSweet Glorys® cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 16 fresh basil leaves
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 4 tbsp garlic, minced
  • Balsamic glaze (homemade or store-bought)
  • Sea salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, freshly ground, to taste

Instructions: Assembling Your Delicious Caprese Flatbread

Preheat & Prep: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.

Oil & Season Flatbreads: Brush both sides of the store-bought flatbreads with extra virgin olive oil. Place 2 tablespoons of minced garlic on both flatbreads. Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.

Par-Bake the Crust: Place the oiled and seasoned flatbreads on the prepared baking sheet. Par-bake them in the preheated oven for 8 minutes. This helps them get slightly crispy before adding the toppings.

Cool Slightly: Remove the par-baked flatbreads from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. This will make them easier to handle.

Add Cheese & Tomatoes: Top each flatbread with slices of fresh mozzarella cheese and halved NatureSweet Glorys® cherry tomatoes. Distribute the toppings evenly between both flatbreads, ensuring every bite has a taste of each ingredient.

Bake Until Cheese is Golden: Place the topped flatbreads back in the oven and bake for an additional 8 minutes, or until the mozzarella cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden in spots.

Cool & Finish: Remove the baked Caprese flatbreads from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes.
