In moderation, carrots are a healthy and safe snack for dogs. They’re low in calories, rich in fiber, and full of vitamins like Vitamin A, which is great for your pup’s vision, skin, and coat health. Homemade dog treats are rising in popularity, as in recent years more benefits have been unveiled.
Only four ingredients are needed to whip up a batch for your pup — flour, carrots, almond butter, and baking powder.
How To Make Carrot Dog Treats
Some dogs can have sensitivities or allergies to certain foods, so it’s always a good idea to introduce new treats slowly and watch for any signs of discomfort. And just like children, carrots are a choking hazard! Make sure to shred carrots for this recipe to ensure even the smallest of dogs can digest easily.
Step one – Gather 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of shredded carrots, 1 cup of almond butter and 1 tablespoon of baking soda and mix it in a bowl.
Step two – Add flour to a cutting board, and roll out dough into roughly a 1/4 inch thickness. Use any sort of cookie cutter to create your treats.
Step three – Bake treats at 375 degrees, for 9-13 minutes (until golden brown). Let cool before giving to your pet!
The Benefits of Carrots For Dogs

- They are rich in fiber, which helps a dog’s digestive health. They also contain Vitamin A, which promotes healthy skin and great vision.

Required the addition of some eggs but the pups loved them!
Can you use any shredded fruit/vegetable ? (And of course no toxic ones)
You can also substitute cooked shredded chicken instead of carrots. And you can try melting the peanut/almond butter to make it easier to stir.
Thanks for the great tip!! We love hearing back from our followers.
Hey, I was wondering how long do these cookies last?
I’m so sorry to hear about your dog’s passing, even now. I am so happy to find this recipe though, because it’s our first dog’s “Gotcha Day” tomorrow, and I wanted to spoil him properly 🙂 I’ll make them in memory of Haley tomorrow <3
Can you use organic peanut butter if you don’t have almond butter?
Kelly, you can substitute peanut butter if you wish. Choose unsalted peanut butter and be sure to avoid peanut butter with Xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Regardless of which nut butter you use, give in moderation (as you would any dog treat) because both are high in natural fats.
I’m not a baker and don’t have a dough hook so I mixed it all together by hand. I had to add three eggs before it would come together enough for me to roll out. They’re in the oven now. I’ll let you know how our Havanese, Asa and London, like them.
What a great tribute to her! Thanks for sharing!
