When witches and goblins come knocking, serve them something truly mystical: Dragon Egg Soup. This eerie‑looking concoction blends cactus pear, rambutan, and longans into a shimmering, hauntingly beautiful potion—each “dragon egg” fruit bobbing like mysterious orbs in a cauldron. It’s the perfect party drink to spark wonder, sneak in rare fruits, and invite curious guests into your realm of spooky, flavorful fun.

How to Make Dragon Egg Punch

This punch is a really fun way to encourage your kids to try out new fruits. Kids are much more likely to try foods that have fun names or are served in a silly way. After Halloween is over, you might be surprised to find your kiddos requesting rambutans or longans at the grocery store!

  1. Wearing gloves, carefully slice off cactus pear skin, discarding the tough peel.

  2. In a blender, purée the cactus pear with 1 cup of apple cider until smooth.

  3. Strain the purée through a fine meshed strainer or cheesecloth to remove seeds and fibrous bits.

  4. In a large punch bowl, combine the strained purée, the remaining cider, and sparkling water.

  5. Peel the rambutans and longans (or your substitute) and gently drop them into the punch—watch them float like enchanted eggs.

Ingredients

  • Cactus Pear – describe its flavor (mild, subtly sweet) and texture; mention where to find it or how to pick a good one.

  • Rambutan & Longans – explain why they’re used (they look like “eggs” floating in the punch), how to peel them, and what they add in texture or intrigue.

  • Apple Cider + Sparkling Water – why these liquids are used (balance of sweet + fizz)

  • Substitutions / Variations – for people who can’t find cactus pear, rambutan, or longans, suggest backup fruits (e.g. dragon fruit, lychee, grapes) or flavor tweaks (ginger, lime, mint).

  • Optional additions – like fresh herbs (mint, basil), edible glitter, or dry ice for smoky effect.

Why “Dragon Egg”?

The name comes from the visual spectacle: rambutans and longans, once peeled, resemble little dragon eggs bobbing in mystical liquid. Meanwhile, cactus pear gives the brew an otherworldly, translucent green tint—like the glow of a freshly hatched dragon’s nest.

Dragon Egg Soup

Ingredients 

  • 10 cactus pears
  • 2 cups apple cider
  • 2 cups sparkling water
  • 6 rambutans
  • 6 longans

Instructions 

  • Wearing gloves, slice the skins off the cactus pears and discard.
  • Purée the cactus pears and 1 cup of the apple cider in a food processor or blender.
  • Press the purée through a fine strainer into a bowl to catch the juice.
  • You should get approximately 3 cups of liquid. Discard the dry seeds and pulp.
  • In a punch bowl, combine the cactus pear mixture with the sparkling water and the remaining apple cider.
  • Slice the skin off the longans and rambutans and add the fruit to the punch bowl.
