Serving & Storage Tips
Serving Variation: Serve Without a Football Shape
If you prefer a simpler presentation or aren’t celebrating a football event, here’s how to serve the dip:
- Skip the plastic wrap and chilling.
- After mixing in the toffee bits, simply transfer the dip directly into a shallow, round serving dish or bowl.
- Smooth out the top with a spoon and sprinkle the mini chocolate chips and any remaining toffee bits over the surface for garnish.
- Surround the dish with your favorite dippers and serve!
Ingredient Substitutions
- Cream Cheese: Substitute with Neufchâtel cheese for a slightly lower-fat option.
- Toffee Bits: Swap for chopped pecans, walnuts, crushed pretzels, or crushed Oreo cookies for different textures and flavors.
- Dippers: While apples are classic, try dipping graham crackers, vanilla wafers, pretzels, or strawberries.
- Toffee Bit Flavor: Substitute with miniature caramel pieces for a classic caramel apple dip.
Ingredients Needed to Make Apple Toffee Dip
- 4 apples, sliced (you can choose any variety)
- 8 oz softened cream cheese
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- Pinch of salt
- 3/4 cup Heath toffee bits
- Bag mini chocolate chips
- White icing
How to Make a Football-Shaped Apple Toffee Dip
Mix the Base
In a large bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, brown sugar, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Use a hand mixer or spatula to mix until the mixture is completely smooth and all the sugar is dissolved.
Add the Toffee
Fold in the 3/4 cup of Heath toffee bits until they are evenly distributed throughout the cream cheese mixture.
Chill and Shape
Pour the mixture onto a large sheet of plastic wrap. Seal the plastic wrap tightly around the dip and place it in the fridge to chill for at least 2 hours. This chilling process is essential for making the dip firm enough to hold its shape.
Form the Football
When ready to serve, unwrap the chilled dip and use your hands to firmly mold the mixture into the shape of a football.
Decorate and Finish
- Pour the mini chocolate chips onto a plate. Carefully roll the football-shaped dip into the chocolate chips until it is entirely covered, resembling a brown football on turf.
- To create the laces, snip a tiny corner off a plastic zipper bag (or use a piping bag) and fill it with the white icing. Pipe a long line down the center of the football, and then pipe several short, perpendicular lines across the center line to create the laces.
- Place the finished dip on a serving board and surround it with sliced apples for dipping.
Leftover Apple Toffee Dip should be stored immediately. Place the dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will keep well for 3 to 4 days. If stored as a football shape, you may want to gently scrape off the chocolate chips before storing to maintain the best texture. Always cut and serve fresh apples each time, as pre-sliced apples will brown quickly.
